This book teaches fundamentals, technique, and has melodies that are fun to play. Raw Beginner: David Hickman's 100 Progressive Lessons for Trumpet. Also, not much music there that a beginner can play (first solo melody has Scotch snaps, turns, triplets, and a G above the staff. Sure, it has first studies, but it's dry, and has issues such as a fourth line D in the first exercise, and then it gets really challenging really quickly. It's a great study book for intermediate to advancing players (high school to college level), but for people just learning the instrument, the Arbans doesn't offer much. For people who are NEW at trumpet (haven't played for more than a year or two), please don't recommend the Arbans book.
